What Is the Difference Between Botox and Dermal Fillers?

As you age, you may notice certain natural changes in your appearance. Wrinkles, fine lines, sagging, and creasing are among the most common signs of aging.

While many people try to resolve these age-related changes with beauty store products, it often requires more thorough treatment to see significant results.

Two of the most effective ways to address signs of aging are BOTOX® injections and dermal fillers. If you are considering anti-aging treatments to achieve your aesthetic goals, learning more about these two popular injectables and what sets them apart can be helpful.

Botox

BOTOX is a cosmetic treatment that focuses on resolving wrinkles and fine lines. BOTOX works beneath the skin as a neuromodulator to relax muscles and subdue facial movement. Our med spa provides Botox injectables as an anti-aging treatment.

Many people do not realize that continuous facial movement causes wrinkles to form as they age. When BOTOX is injected into the skin, it limits this movement, makes the skin appear smoother, and prevents new wrinkles and creases from developing.

BOTOX can be used anywhere on the face, but it is most often used on the forehead, around the eyes, and surrounding the mouth. This can effectively resolve age-related changes like furrow lines and crow’s feet.

Another use for BOTOX is as a treatment for chronic migraines. When injected in the back of the neck, along the jawline, and at the base of the skull, BOTOX can interact with the nerves and muscles under the skin to relax tension and prevent discomfort.

Botox is also a popular treatment option for TMJ pain, as it can reduce tension and inflammation of the temporomandibular joint. Botox is administered in small doses along the jawline, reducing strain and pain.

This treatment can last up to four months before another injection may be necessary. It benefits those suffering from TMJ pain, as it can provide relief for an extended period with minimal side effects.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are another popular cosmetic injectable at our med spa and can be used in two different ways.

The first method is as an anti-aging treatment. Dermal fillers use synthetic hyaluronic acid to add supple volume beneath the skin. This is beneficial for patients with wrinkles and sagging caused by the natural decline in hyaluronic acid that occurs with aging.

When volume is increased under the skin, it can smooth out wrinkles and increase youthfulness. This can address laugh lines, sagging in the cheeks, lip lines, sleep wrinkles, and nasolabial folds.

Dermal fillers can also be used for facial enhancement. Fillers are often used to add fullness to the lips, giving them a more plump appearance. Additionally, they can be used along the jawline or at the height of the cheekbones to create a more contoured facial structure.

How to Determine Which Treatment Is Right for You

While both BOTOX and dermal fillers can produce a younger-looking appearance, they are each used for different signs of aging. Some patients benefit from strategic treatment that combines the two options for facial rejuvenation.

The best way to determine which option is right for you is by consulting with a skilled med spa provider. The med spa team at Virginia Advanced Surgical Arts can assess your skin concerns and develop a personalized treatment plan that meets your unique needs.
