It seems like your refrigerator is empty, and the pantry only has the girl-scout cookies you shouldn’t have bought last month. This could only mean one thing – it is time for a trip to the grocery store to stack up on all your favorite meals and treats.
You arrive at the grocery store ready to shop, strolling down the aisles looking for the best groceries for you.
Apples, oranges, milk, juice – so many options everywhere, but what should you buy today?
As you ponder you see an “organic” sign above the apples on the right hand side, and there is a “natural” sign over the apples to the left. Although both kinds of apples look the same, they have different signs, but what is the difference?
A lot of people do not know that there is a big difference between “natural” and “organic” labels. It is important to know the difference between these two labels, so you can make the best decision that will benefit your health and well-being.
A key aspect to remember is – “natural” does not mean organic! “Natural foods” often contain ingredients that are minimally synthesized. The United States Department of Agriculture, USDA, does not strictly regulate the use of the label “natural” so manufactures are able to use it more freely.
However, unlike “natural” labels, “organic” labels have strict rules and regulations so “organic” labels serve more as a guarantee. An “organic” label guarantees that no toxic synthetic herbicides, or chemical fertilizers were used in production. “Organic” also indicates that no antibiotics or growth hormones were given to animals.
It is important to be aware of the meaning behind these labels, so you know what you are buying. There are many perspectives to these labels, and people choose “organic” foods over “natural” foods, and vice versa.
